What are the Afghan people saying about the Rolling Stone article that got Gen. Stanley McChrystal fired? Not that much. In fact, most Afghan news outlets are opining that the reason the four-star general was ousted was not because of the controversial magazine story, it’s because he was too close to Afghan President Hamid Karzai, and Washington didn’t like that.
The New York Times takes a look at some of the coverage of the story in Afghanistan in its blog, At War.
Here‘s one editorial: “McChrystal’s close relationship to the Afghan President’s team probably had an impact on his sacking. We should not forget that some of the leaders in the White House still do not consider President Karzai a trustworthy and powerful partner. They believe that the White House cannot put up with the direction in which President Karzai’s tribal politics, including his flawed plan to reach out the insurgents, has taken this war.”
